Etymology
Încerca comes from Vulgar Latin circare, meaning to go around or to search, itself built on circus, a circle. Romanian added the prefix în- to this root, giving a verb that literally meant to search into something. Over time the sense narrowed from searching to testing, and finally to trying or attempting. The same Latin root gave Italian cercare and French chercher, both meaning to search.
