Etymology

Încercat is the past participle of a încerca, meaning to try or attempt. The verb goes back to Vulgar Latin incircare, built from in- and circare, to go around, itself from circus, circle. The idea of circling something shifted toward probing or testing it, and later settled into the plain sense of trying. Romanian shares this root with Italian cercare and French chercher, both meaning to search.
