Etymology
Romanian borrowed ambulanță from French ambulance in the 19th century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. French ambulance began as a shortening of hôpital ambulant, a mobile field hospital, from ambulant, present participle of ambuler, itself from Latin ambulare, to walk. The word shifted from meaning a mobile hospital to meaning the vehicle that transports the sick.
