Etymology
Romanian borrowed the word directly from Italian mafia in the twentieth century, as organized crime in Sicily became internationally known. The Italian word itself has a disputed origin, possibly Sicilian dialect or Arabic, and its earliest roots are not established. Romanian adapted the ending from -ia to -ie, following a common pattern for abstract nouns taken from Italian or Greek-Latin sources, such as utopie from utopia.
