Etymology
Romanian borrowed simpatic in the 19th century as part of a wave of French and Italian vocabulary that modernized the language. The word traces back to Greek sympathēs, built from syn- ('together') and pathos ('feeling'). Over time the sense narrowed from 'sharing feeling with someone' to simply 'likeable' or 'pleasant to be around'.
