Ades is a shortened, older form built on the Romanian adjective and adverb des, meaning frequent or dense. Des comes from Latin densus, thick or crowded, which in Romanian shifted to also mean frequent in time. The prefix a- is a common Romanian adverb-forming element, seen also in words like acum (now) and atunci (then). Ades once stood alongside the fuller adesea, and both meant the same thing: often.
