The verb a învăța comes from Latin invitiare, a rare Vulgar Latin formation built on vitium in the sense of a habit or custom rather than a fault. The original idea was to accustom someone to something, which shifted in Romanian to the general sense of learning or teaching. Romanian kept this Latin root where other Romance languages replaced it with words based on apprehendere or docere, which is why învăța has no close cognates in French, Italian, or Spanish for this meaning.
