Etymology
Învățat is the past participle of a învăța, to learn or to teach. Most dictionaries trace the verb to a Vulgar Latin form built on vitium, meaning fault or bad habit, with the sense of becoming accustomed to something. Over time that idea of habituation narrowed to mean acquiring knowledge, and the participle came to describe someone who is schooled or accustomed. The link between habit and learning is unusual and is specific to Romanian; it did not happen in the other Romance languages.
