Etymology

Teme is the plural of temă, borrowed from Latin thema, which itself came from Greek thema, meaning something laid down or proposed. The Greek word derives from tithenai, to put or place, the same verb root behind English words like thesis. Romanian took the word through learned Latin and French channels during its modern vocabulary reforms.
