Etymology

Romanian "apel" entered the language in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. It comes from French "appel" (a calling, a summons), which traces to Old French "apeler" and ultimately to Latin "appellare," meaning to call upon or address. That Latin verb is built from "ad-" (toward) and "pellere" (to drive, to push). The old sense of driving someone to respond by calling out survives today in a phone call, a roll call, and a legal appeal.
