Staț is a modern colloquial clipping of stație, the Romanian word for station. Stație itself came into Romanian from French station, which traces back to Latin statio, a standing or post, built on the verb stare, to stand. Speakers shortened the longer word for speed in everyday talk, so staț carries no separate history of its own beyond being a trimmed version of stație.
