Etymology

Alți is the masculine plural form of alt, which descends from Latin alter, meaning the other of two. The t of the Latin root survived into Romanian, and the plural ending -i triggered palatalization, turning t into ț. This same Latin root spread across the Romance languages, each time shifting slightly in form and meaning.
