Etymology
The word is a fusion of two older elements: "altă", the feminine form of "alt" (other), from Latin "alter", and "dată", meaning a point in time, from Latin "data" (given), the feminine past participle of "dare" (to give). Together they meant "another given time", the same logic behind the English word "date". Over centuries the two words fused into a single invariable adverb.
