Etymology
Judecător comes from the verb a judeca, to judge, which descends from Latin iudicare. Iudicare itself joins ius, law or right, with dicare, to proclaim, so the original sense is to pronounce the law. The agentive suffix -tor, inherited from Latin -tor, turns the verb into the one who judges.
