Învață is a form of the verb a învăța, which Romanian inherited from spoken Latin. The Latin source, invitiare, was built from the prefix in- and vitium, a word meaning habit or custom. The original sense was close to to accustom someone to something, and over centuries this narrowed to mean to teach or to learn. Romanian is one of the few Romance languages that kept this word as its everyday verb for learning.
