Câine descends from Latin canis, the ordinary word for dog. The Latin word passed through Vulgar Latin into Romanian with regular sound changes, including the shift of the stressed vowel to â (/ɨ/). Romanian kept this core Latin term for dog, unlike some other Romance languages that later favored other words.
