Etymology
Cățea is the feminine counterpart of cățel, the Romanian word for a puppy or young dog. Cățel goes back to Latin catellus, a diminutive of catulus, meaning young animal or puppy. Romanian built the feminine form by swapping the masculine diminutive ending -el for -ea, a pattern also found in other animal-name pairs. Over time cățea lost its diminutive flavor and became the plain word for an adult female dog, while also picking up a harsh insulting sense parallel to English bitch.
