Etymology
Romanian cimitir comes from French cimetière and Modern Greek koimitírio, both descending from Late Latin coemeterium. That Latin word was borrowed from Ancient Greek koimētḗrion, meaning sleeping place or dormitory, from the verb koimáō, to put to sleep. Early Christians used the term as a euphemism for a burial ground, and it spread across Europe through church Latin.
