Etymology

Mormânt comes from the Latin monumentum, meaning a reminder or memorial. Popular Latin speech in the region wore the word down through sound changes until it settled into the modern Romanian form. Romanian later borrowed the same Latin root a second time, directly, as the more formal word monument, so the two words are doublets from one source.
