Etymology
Orb comes from Latin orbus, meaning bereft or deprived, originally of a limb, a parent, or a sense. Romanian kept this word to mean blind, while most other Romance languages replaced it with derivatives of Latin caecus (Italian cieco, Spanish ciego) or built new terms (French aveugle). This makes orb one of the clearer cases of a Latin word surviving in Romanian but dying out elsewhere in the Romance family.
