Nenorocită is the feminine form of nenorocit, the past participle of the verb a nenoroci, meaning to ruin or to bring misfortune upon someone. The verb is built from the negative prefix ne- attached to noroc, meaning luck or fortune, plus the participle ending -it. Noroc itself entered Romanian from a Slavic source, so the word joins a Latin-descended negative prefix and participle suffix with a Slavic root for luck.
