Etymology

Victorie was borrowed into Romanian from French victoire or directly from Latin victoria during the nineteenth-century push to re-latinize the language. It sits alongside an older, inherited Romanian word from the same Latin family, a învinge (to defeat), which came down through spoken Latin rather than a later book borrowing. Both trace back to the Latin verb vincere, to conquer.
