Etymology
Romă is the feminine form of rom, the Romanian rendering of the Romani people's own self-designation, rom, meaning 'man' or 'husband' in the Romani language. Linguists generally trace this word back to an Indo-Aryan term for a caste of itinerant musicians and entertainers in the Indian subcontinent. The word entered Romanian through direct contact with Romani-speaking communities, not through Latin. It is unrelated to the identical-looking Romanian word rom meaning 'rum', which comes from English via French.
