Etymology

Respecta entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a deliberate wave of borrowing from French and Latin, meant to re-Latinize the vocabulary after centuries of Slavic and Ottoman influence. It comes from French respecter, itself from Latin respectare, a frequentative form of respicere, meaning to look back at or take notice of. The underlying idea is repeated attention: to respect something is to keep looking back at it and taking it into account.
