Etymology
Romanian borrowed "cec" from French "chèque" in the 20th century, as banking terminology spread through French cultural influence. French "chèque" in turn came from English "check"/"cheque", a word rooted in chess: a "check" was a warning that the king was under threat, from Old French "eschec", from Arabic and ultimately Persian "shah" (king). The sense shifted over centuries from a chess warning to a general term for a restraining control, and then specifically to a written order controlling payment from a bank account.
