Etymology

Romanian borrowed "ciocolată" from French "chocolat" in the 19th century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary during that era. French in turn took the word from Spanish "chocolate", which came from Nahuatl "xocolātl", a term for a bitter cacao drink made by the Aztecs. The word therefore traces back to Mesoamerica, not to any Indo-European root.
