Etymology
Gelos entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Italian borrowings that modernized the language. It comes from French jaloux and Italian geloso, both descending from Medieval Latin zelosus, built on Latin zelus, itself borrowed from Greek zēlos, meaning zeal or ardor. The shift from zeal to jealousy happened in Medieval Latin and Romance usage, where intense devotion curdled into possessive suspicion.
