Etymology

Credit entered Romanian through French crédit and Italian credito in the nineteenth century, when Romanian vocabulary was reshaped along Western Romance lines. Both trace to Latin creditum, the neuter past participle of credere, meaning to believe or to entrust. The financial sense, a sum lent on trust, sits alongside the older sense of trust or reputation itself.
