Etymology

Nenorocit is a native Romanian formation, not a direct loanword. It is built from the negative prefix ne-, the noun noroc (luck), a verb suffix, and the past participle ending -it, so it literally means something like made unlucky or stripped of luck. Noroc itself came into Romanian from a Slavic source, so the word combines a Slavic core with ordinary Romanian participle morphology. That mix of Latin-derived grammar and Slavic vocabulary is typical of Romanian.
