Etymology

Același is a fusion of two older words: acela, meaning "that one," and și, a small word meaning "also" or "even." Acela itself comes from Latin demonstrative material built on ille, "that." Și comes from Latin sic, "thus." Speakers glued acela and și together into one word, and the combined sense of "that one, also" hardened into "the same one."
