Etymology
Vis descends from the Latin noun visum, meaning "something seen" or "a vision," the neuter past participle of videre, "to see." Romanian kept the word almost unchanged, narrowing its sense to the images a sleeping mind produces, and later extending it to a waking hope or ambition. The same Latin root spread across the Romance languages and beyond, always tied to sight.
