Etymology
The word comes from Latin permittere, a combination of per- ("through") and mittere ("to send"). The original sense was to send something through or to let it pass. Over time this shifted to the abstract meaning of allowing or granting permission. Romanian kept the verb almost intact from Latin, unlike many Romance languages that reshaped it further.
