Etymology
Prietenie is built on prieten, "friend," which Romanian borrowed from Old Church Slavonic prijatelĭ during the centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors. That Slavic word goes back to a root meaning "to favor" or "be well disposed toward." The abstract suffix -ie, meaning roughly "-ship" or "-ness," turns the person word into the state word.
