Etymology

Prietenă is the feminine form of prieten, a word Romanian borrowed from Old Slavic prijatelĭ, meaning friend. That Slavic noun comes from the verb prijati, to favor or be well disposed toward someone. The underlying root also produced the English word friend, by a different, Germanic route, which is why the two words share a deep family resemblance despite looking nothing alike.
