Etymology

Baie descends from Latin balneum, meaning bath, through the Vulgar Latin form baneum. Romanian inherited it directly, alongside the other Romance languages, and later extended its sense from the act of bathing to the room where one bathes. Latin balneum itself was likely borrowed from Greek balaneion, whose deeper origin is uncertain, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be given.
