Etymology
Secundă entered Romanian through French seconde, itself from Medieval Latin secunda (minuta), meaning the second small division of an hour, after the first division, the minute. The underlying Latin word secundus means following or next, from the verb sequi, to follow. So the second is literally the unit that follows the minute in the chain of smaller time divisions.
