Etymology

Romanian borrowed "zonă" from French "zone" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. French took it from Latin "zona", which came from Greek "ζώνη" (zōnē), meaning belt or girdle. The sense shifted from a physical belt to a girdling band around the earth, like a climate zone, and from there to any bounded area.
