Etymology

Romanian borrowed "stradă" from Italian "strada" during the nineteenth century, when Romanian scholars and writers pulled in large numbers of Italian and French words to modernize the language. Italian "strada" descends from Late Latin "strata (via)", meaning a paved way, the feminine past participle of "sternere", to spread or pave. That Latin verb goes back to a root meaning to spread or strew something flat on the ground.
