Etymology

Noroc entered Romanian from Slavic, built from na- ("onto") plus rokŭ, a term for an appointed lot or fixed span. That same Slavic root rokŭ shows up with a shifted sense in Polish and Czech rok ("year") and in Serbian rok ("deadline, term"). In Romanian the word narrowed over time to mean simply luck or fortune.
