Etymology
Romanian borrowed "dolar" from French "dollar" or German "Dollar" in the nineteenth century, as the currency became a reference point in trade and finance. The word itself traces back to "Joachimsthaler," a silver coin minted in the Bohemian town of Joachimstal in the sixteenth century, shortened to "thaler" and then "taler." That German term spread across Europe and entered English as "dollar." Romanian trimmed the spelling to match its own phonetics, dropping the double letters.
