Etymology

Fiică descends from Latin filia, "daughter", the feminine counterpart of filius, "son". Romanian kept both terms as fiu and fiică, adding the feminine suffix -că to the old root. The word survived unbroken from Latin through the whole history of Romanian, unlike many terms replaced by Slavic or later borrowings.
