Etymology
Propriu comes from Latin proprius, meaning "one's own" or "particular to itself." Etymologists are not fully certain of its deeper origin; it may be a contraction of pro privo, "for the individual," built on privus, "single, individual." Because that inner history is disputed, no further root is claimed here. The word passed into Romanian through the ordinary Latin-to-Romance line of descent, the same line that gave English its borrowed form "proper."
