Etymology
Scăpa descends from Vulgar Latin excappare, built from ex- ("out of") and cappa ("cloak"). The underlying image is a fugitive who slips out of his cloak to break free of a pursuer's grip, leaving only the garment behind. The same Vulgar Latin verb gave Italian scappare, French échapper, and Spanish escapar, so Romanian inherited it as part of the shared Romance stock rather than borrowing it later.
