Etymology
Foc comes from Latin focus, meaning hearth or fireplace. Classical Latin used ignis for fire itself, but in everyday spoken Latin focus gradually took over that meaning, and this newer sense passed into the Romance languages. The deeper, pre-Latin origin of focus is not firmly established, so no secure root is assigned to it here. The same Latin word also gave English focus, originally the hearth at the center of a Roman house.
