Etymology

Scăpare is a noun built from the verb a scăpa, which traces back to Vulgar Latin excappare, literally to get out of one's cape. The image is of a fugitive slipping free while a pursuer is left holding only the cloak. The same Vulgar Latin root gave Italian scappare, French échapper, and, through Old French, English escape. In Romanian the suffix -are turns the verb into an abstract noun naming the act or result of escaping.
