Etymology
Romanian borrowed "film" directly from French, which had itself taken the word from English in the late nineteenth century. The English word originally meant a thin membrane or coating, a sense later applied to the light-sensitive strip used in cameras. From there it extended to mean a motion picture, and Romanian adopted that modern sense along with the French spelling and form.
