Filmare is built from the verb a filma, itself formed from the borrowed noun film. Romanian took film from French and English in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when cinema arrived as a new technology. Adding the productive suffix -are, which turns first-conjugation verbs into feminine action nouns, gave filmare, literally the act of filming.
