Etymology
Sacrificiu entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a learned borrowing from Latin sacrificium, reinforced by French sacrifice, during the period when Romanian scholars rebuilt the language's formal vocabulary from Latin and French sources. Latin sacrificium itself is a compound of sacer, meaning sacred or holy, and facere, meaning to make or do. So the original sense is literally the act of making something sacred, typically by offering it up. This is a neologism rather than a word inherited unbroken from spoken Latin, so it entered alongside similar Latin-based abstract nouns in -iu.
