Etymology
Lângă comes from Latin longe, an adverb meaning 'far away, from a distance'. In spoken Latin the phrase seems to have shifted from marking a great distance to marking a fixed, measured distance, and by the time Romanian took shape the word had narrowed to mean 'close by'. The flip from 'far' to 'near' is one of the more unusual semantic turns in Romanian's Latin vocabulary.
