Stație entered Romanian in the 19th century as part of a wave of French and Latin-based borrowings that modernized the language's vocabulary. It traces to Latin statio, stationis, meaning a standing place or post, itself built on the verb stare, to stand. Romanian reshaped the borrowed word with its own productive noun suffix -ție, the same pattern seen in națiune-type loans.
